Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to the questions Americans at Aviano ask us most.
Do I need an AFI driver's license to drive in Italy?
Yes. As a member of the US forces in Italy, you need an AFI driver's license, issued on base. You apply with a valid US state (or EU) license after a traffic safety briefing and a written test during Newcomers.
Can I drive in other European countries with my AFI license?
The AFI license is only valid in Italy. For other countries, get an International Driving Permit (for example from AAA) before you leave the US.
What do I need to buy a car from you?
Your AFI driver's license, your military or dependent ID, your orders, Italian car insurance and €100 in cash for the deregistration fee. We handle the rest with you.
Why do I need €100 in cash?
Before a car can go onto base plates, we take it off the Italian civilian register. There's a government fee of €100 for this, paid in cash.
Do you handle the paperwork and plates?
Yes. We prepare the car for the base inspection, fix anything it flags, take care of the Italian paperwork and fit your AFI plates once the base issues them.
Do I need Italian car insurance before I buy?
You need insurance before the car can be registered on base, so it's worth getting quotes early. We can point you to providers our customers use.
Are your cars automatic?
Most of them are. Use the "Automatic only" filter on our cars page to see just the automatics.
Are prices in euros or dollars?
Prices are in euros. The dollar figure is an estimate based on today's exchange rate, so you get a feel for the cost without doing the math.
Is "Reserve this car" free? Is it binding?
It's free and not binding. You send us your details, and Peter contacts you within 24 hours to arrange a deposit, which holds the car for you.
Do you buy cars back when I PCS?
Yes. Tell us about your car and when you're leaving through our Sell your car page, and we'll make you an offer. Planning early avoids a last-minute fire sale.
Do I need winter tires?
In Friuli Venezia Giulia, where Aviano is, winter tires or snow chains on board are required on many roads from November 15 to April 15.
What is a ZTL?
A "Zona a Traffico Limitato" is a restricted zone in many town centers, watched by cameras. Driving in when it's active means a fine by mail, so look for the round white sign with a red border and park outside the center.
